Commuting Sucks

When I first moved to Southern California, I didn’t have a problem with tailgating. No food, drinks, music, and fun lawn games here; I’m talking about the I’m riding up your a** in morning traffic tailgating.

Maybe it was the New Jersey plates that made people back off, or maybe I simply didn’t care to notice, but this is getting ridiculous. I moved to California a little over eight years ago and for the first year or so I still had New Jersey license plates on my car. Despite how insane it was to navigate the complicated streets of New York City, I immediately understood why certain parts of Southern California were considered traffic nightmares.

“I don’t know why people think it’s cook to tailgate, especially when there isn’t any traffic.”

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not the type of driver that gets impatient or has road rage whenever there is traffic. I understand that traffic is uncontrollable and unpredictable. But what I don’t like is when people tailgate me, when stuck in bumper to bumper traffic and there is absolutely no need! In the beginning, I was convinced that people in CA just don’t know how to drive. And I started to notice it even more once I retired my NJ plates and became a “full-time” Californian.

“I constantly think to myself, one slam on the brakes and it’s fender bender city pal!”

Nonetheless, I’m still a Jerseyite at heart and where I come from the tailgating game is just downright blasphemous! Drivers in the northeast are just as bad, but its that type of driving will get you a roadside beat-down. Trust me, it happens. For the most part, I’m a defensive driver, but there are times where you need to be offensive because it can get ridiculous at times.

For some reason, drivers out here think if they tailgate you long enough, you’ll just move out of the way (no matter what lane you are in). I don’t play that game, nor am I intimidated by such reckless driving. If anything, tailgating me just makes me want to go even slower. It’s times like these where I wish I still had my Jersey plates, so people would back the “F” up!
